Cal Grant

Cal Grants are funded by the state of California to help students pay for college expenses. The awards do not have to be repaid.

There are three types of Cal Grants — A, B and C — but you don’t have to figure out which one to apply for. Your eligibility will be based on your FAFSA or CADAA responses, your verified Cal Grant GPA, the type of California colleges you list on your FAFSA and whether you’re a recent high school graduate.

Cal Grant A helps low and middle-income students with tuition costs at a four-year California college. Although this grant can only be used at a four-year college, students are encouraged to apply while attending Butte College because awards can be held "on reserve" until the student transfers. Eligibility is determined in part by submitting the FAFSA or California Dream Act Application (not both).

Cal Grant B
 provides assistance for educational expenses to students from disadvantaged and low-income families. Awards range from $100 - $1,648 and do not need to be repaid. Eligibility is determined in part by submitting the FAFSA or California Dream Act Application (not both).

Cal Grant C provides tuition and a training allowance for students enrolled in a vocational program. Cal Grant C awards are a maximum of $1,094 and do not need to be repaid. Eligibility is determined in part by submitting the FAFSA or California Dream Act application (not both).

Cal Grant Transfer Entitlement Award for students who were not awarded a High School Entitlement Award but are now transferring from a California Community College to an eligible bachelor degree-granting institution in California. Eligibility is determined in part by submitting the FAFSA or California Dream Act Application (not both), and a GPA verification from your community college.

Students with Dependent Children
Governor Newsom and the California State Legislature approved new funding to increase the Cal Grant award beginning in the 2019-2020 academic year for students who have dependent children that are under 18 years of age and whom they provide more than half of their financial support during the academic year.
The amounts listed are the maximum award amounts. Actual award amounts are determined by enrollment and unmet financial need.

  • Cal Grant A- $6,000
  • Cal Grant B- $6,000
  • Cal Grant C- $4,000

If you listed dependents on your FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application you may be considered eligible for this grant increase. Make sure you certify. To certify, create a WebGrants 4 Students account and sign in at mygrantinfo.csac.ca.gov. Once signed in, you should see a popup notification asking you to certify your eligibility if you have been selected for the award.

Cal Grant Community College Entitlement Award is for students attending a California Community College (CCC). Applicants must submit a FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application, plus a Verified Cal Grant GPA to the California Student Aid Commission by September 2.

Cal Grant B for Foster Youth program expands aid for students who are current and former foster youth to be eligible for increased Cal Grant eligibility.

  • Foster youth students may renew their Cal Grant B awards for the equivalent of eight years of full-time attendance in an undergraduate program.
  • Foster youth students have until their 26th birthday to apply for the Cal Grant High School Entitlement Award.
  • Foster youth students attending a California Community College can apply for a High School Entitlement Award through September 5th (rather than March 4).

All Cal Grant applicants must:

  • submit the FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application and your Verified Cal Grant GPA by the deadline
  • be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen or meet AB540 eligibility criteria
  • be a California resident for 1 year
  • attend a qualifying California college
  • not have a bachelor's or professional degree
  • have financial need at the college of your choice
  • have family income and assets below the minimum levels
  • be enrolled or plan to enroll in a program leading to an undergraduate degree or certificate
  • be enrolled or plan to enroll at least half-time
  • not owe a refund on any state or federal grant or be in default on a student loan
  • not be incarcerated
  • maintain the Satisfactory Academic Progress standards as established by the school. Recipients who do not meet the standards are ineligible for Cal Grant payment and will not use eligibility during the terms they are ineligible for payment.

Step One:

If you are a U.S. Citizen, fill out and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

If you are an undocumented or AB 540 eligible student, fill out and submit a California Dream Act Application.

  • The FAFSA is a federal form that must be filed by any student who wants to be considered for college financial aid. For a Cal Grant, the FAFSA must be completed and filed with the federal processor by March 4 for 2024-2025.
  • The California Dream Act Application (CADAA) is a state form instead of a federal form. Like the FAFSA, it must be submitted by March 4 for 2024-2025, directly to the state processor.
  • If you miss the March 2nd Cal Grant deadline and you plan to attend a community college such as Butte College, you may have until September 2nd to apply.

Step Two: ALL STUDENTS must have a Cal Grant GPA Verification Form submitted for them, also by March 2nd of each year. See question below for complete information about GPA verification.

Step Three: HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS. After completing their high school senior year, graduating seniors must verify their high school graduation and date of graduation. This may be completed online at WebGrants 4 Students. Verification of high school graduation must be completed in order to be eligible to receive financial aid funds.

A GPA is one of the requirements needed to be considered for a new Cal Grant award.

Most public California high schools, community colleges, and universities will automatically submit your Cal Grant GPA to us electronically. Because of this, most students don't need to complete a paper GPA verification form.

Graduating high school seniors and college students with fewer than 16 college units earned: to qualify for a Cal Grant, your high school must verify your GPA and submit it to the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC).   • Cal Grant Competitive awards, reserved for students who are ineligible for Cal Grant Entitlement awards and submit a financial aid application by the priority deadline

Renewal Cal Grant Student - no GPA submission required.

For Butte College students with more than 16 units earned: the Financial Aid Office will automatically send in your GPA verification.

Some students do not have a GPA, so certain test scores can be used instead. Please submit your test score along with the GPA Verification Form. Click here for Cal Grant GPA Verification Form.

  • If you have a GED, submit your GED score directly to the California Student Aid Commission.
  • If you graduated from a school that does not provide grades, is not accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) or another regional accrediting agency, or does not have a course list approved by the University of California, you must provide an ACT, SAT or GED score.
  • If you were home schooled or attended a charter school, you must submit an ACT, SAT or GED score.
  • If you graduated from high school more than five years ago, you may provide a SAT or ACT score, or use a re-established GPA.

The Financial Aid Office will automatically send your GPA to the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) if you have earned at least 16 units at Butte College.

Your GPA is calculated on all completed college work, excluding nontransferable units and courses not counted in computation for admission to a California public institution of higher education that grants a baccalaureate degree.

Cal Grants may be renewed for up to four years of full-time enrollment. If you are currently receiving a Cal Grant and wish to renew your grant for the next academic year, we recommend you complete your FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1st of each year. CSAC will automatically notify us if you are eligible to renew your Cal Grant. We will confirm your eligibility by reviewing financial need and enrollment. If you have filed a current Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you can check the status of your Cal Grant application online by logging on to WebGrants 4 Students. This secure site will let you view the status of your Cal Grant application, check your award status, update your address, view payment history, make a school change, or put your Cal Grant "on reserve". This website is available for your convenience, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
